Professional Treatments for Swollen Gums
If your swollen gums are caused by a more serious condition, such as gum disease, infection, or abscess, you may need professional treatment from your dentist. Depending on the cause and severity of your swelling, your dentist may recommend one or more of the following treatments:
Scaling and root planing
Scaling and root planing is a comprehensive dental treatment aimed at combating gum disease. This meticulous procedure involves a deep cleaning technique to eliminate plaque and tartar buildup situated below the gum line. By accessing these areas, it effectively clears away bacteria and deposits, promoting oral health.
During scaling, specialized tools are used to remove the accumulated plaque and tartar, preventing the progression of gum inflammation and infection. Root planing follows, involving the smoothing of the tooth’s root surfaces.
This process helps prevent future accumulation of plaque, fostering healthier gums and averting potential damage to the supportive structures of teeth, such as bone and surrounding tissues.
This professional intervention is instrumental in reducing gum inflammation and infection, safeguarding against further deterioration of dental health. Typically, scaling and root planing are recommended for individuals with early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) or as a preventive measure against advanced periodontal conditions.
It’s crucial to note that this procedure is performed by dental professionals, often in multiple visits depending on the severity of the condition, and can significantly contribute to improved gum health.
Antibiotics
Swollen gums due to bacterial infections may prompt dentists to prescribe antibiotics. These medications serve to eradicate bacteria causing the infection. Antibiotics are administered orally or topically, targeting the affected area to combat the underlying bacterial growth.
Following your dentist’s guidance is crucial regarding the proper administration and completion of the prescribed antibiotic regimen. Compliance with the full course of treatment is essential to ensure the complete eradication of the infection and prevent its recurrence.
Antibiotics play a pivotal role in addressing gum infections, aiding in clearing bacterial colonies causing inflammation. However, it’s important to use them judiciously and as directed by dental professionals to prevent antibiotic resistance and ensure optimal treatment outcomes.
Gum surgery
Gum surgery becomes necessary in advanced gum disease cases where substantial bone and tissue loss has occurred. This surgical intervention aims to repair damage and rejuvenate gum health. Various gum surgeries exist, including flap surgery, bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, and guided tissue regeneration.
Flap surgery involves incisions in the gums to access and clean deep-rooted tartar. Bone grafting reinforces bone structure by adding new tissue to damaged areas. Soft tissue grafting aids in covering exposed tooth roots by adding gum tissue. Guided tissue regeneration fosters bone regrowth using specialized materials.
Consultation with a dentist is pivotal, as they’ll determine the most suitable surgery, providing insights into the procedure and recovery journey.
Gum surgeries are tailored to each individual’s needs, aiming to restore oral health by addressing specific issues related to advanced gum disease-induced damage.
How to Prevent Swollen Gums
The best way to prevent swollen gums is to maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Here are some tips on how to prevent swollen gums:
Brush your teeth at least twice a day.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste to gently brush your teeth and gums for two minutes. Make sure to reach all the surfaces of your teeth, especially the ones near the gum line. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or when the bristles become frayed.
Floss your teeth daily
- Flossing Importance: Flossing daily is crucial in preventing swollen gums by eliminating plaque and food debris nestled between teeth and gums, inaccessible to a toothbrush. This practice safeguards against gum irritation and potential inflammation.
- Proper Technique: Employ a gentle up-and-down movement while sliding the floss between teeth. Curve the floss around each tooth, ensuring thorough cleaning without snapping it into the gums, which might cause bleeding and irritation.
Flossing not only maintains oral hygiene but also prevents gum swelling, offering a simple yet effective way to preserve gum health.
Use a mouthwash
- Mouthwash Benefits: Using mouthwash as part of oral hygiene helps eliminate residual plaque and bacteria, enhancing oral cleanliness and combating bad breath. Opt for fluoride-containing mouthwashes to reinforce enamel and stave off cavities, contributing to better dental health.
- Choosing Wisely: Prioritize alcohol-free mouthwashes to prevent dryness and potential irritation of the gums. Alcohol-based mouthwashes can aggravate gum sensitivity and lead to discomfort, so it’s prudent to avoid them for optimal oral health.
Mouthwash, when used correctly and with the right formulation, can significantly contribute to a healthier mouth, preventing swollen gums and promoting overall dental well-being.
Avoid tobacco products
Tobacco can harm your oral health in many ways, such as staining your teeth, causing bad breath, and increasing your risk of oral cancer. Tobacco can also irritate your gums and make them more prone to infection and inflammation. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, quit as soon as possible. Ask your doctor or dentist for help and support to quit.
Eat a balanced diet
Eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables can help you get the vitamins and minerals you need for your oral health. Vitamin C, for example, can help boost your immune system and prevent gum disease.
Vitamin B, on the other hand, can help prevent mouth sores and inflammation. Avoid foods and drinks that are high in sugar, acid, or starch, as they can erode your enamel and feed the bacteria that cause plaque and cavities.
See your dentist regularly
Your dentist can help you prevent and treat swollen gums and other oral health problems. You should see your dentist at least twice a year for a comprehensive oral exam and a professional cleaning. Your dentist can also give you advice on how to improve your oral hygiene and recommend any necessary treatments for your gums.
