You must have heard of evil eye disease, right? Many question whether the disease really exists or not. But in Islam, there is believed to be a disease caused by eye sight called Evil Eye.
Unlike most diseases that attack physically, this disease is invisible and more difficult to cure. Actually, what are the causes of evil eye disease and how to avoid it?
Check out more in the review below.
Understanding Evil Eye
Evil eye disease in Islam, there are two kinds of understanding. Before discussing the disease, it is first necessary to know what evil eye is.
First, this disease can be interpreted as the view of a person who has bad habits in his heart there is a sense of jealousy, spite, and wants to harm the person he sees.
In addition, it also includes a look of admiration or amazement from people who are not feeling spiteful, but such admiration is not accompanied by the remembrance of Allah Almighty.
In the Qur’an, an evil eye is also mentioned implicitly in Surah Al-Qalam verse 51 below.
It means: “And indeed the unbelievers are about to derail you with their sights, when they hear the Qur’an, and they say, “Indeed, he (Muhammad) is a madman.”
QS Al-Qalam: 51
The effects of this view called evil eye disease can vary. Some can make people who are seen directly sick, wretched, or even cause death.
However, not all views are powerful. This powerful view does not necessarily manifest in one’s awe or spiteful gaze. Only certain people have it.
Causes of evil eye disease
The cause of this disease is due to envy of the favors that others have. They look at the other person with a spiteful look that can cause this disease. Conversely, a look of awe can also cause evil eye.
The disease can also occur without having to look directly according to Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyah. He said that the soul of the person who caused the disease could have caused the disease without having to see it directly. Even blind people don’t see it.
This disease can afflict any age, even inanimate objects. However, the most vulnerable people with this disease are young children. Because, they still can’t protect themselves from negative things.
Signs of Evil Eye
The characteristics of this disease are almost the same as evil eye diseases. The characteristics of this disease in older persons and children include the following.
Signs of evil eye disease in older persons:
- Pale face
- No appetite
- Dizziness of the head
- Frequent vomiting
- Difficulty sleeping at night
- Pain in the back and between two shoulders
- It’s easy to cry for no reason.
Signs of evil eye disease in children:
- Unnatural crying never stops
- Unprovoked convulsions
- Unwilling to breastfeed for no reason
- Deteriorating body condition
- Uncharacteristically fussy.
Prayer to avoid evil eye
This disease can be very dangerous, so it needs to be watched out for. One of them is by asking Allah SWT for protection with the following prayer.
“I take refuge with the perfect sentences of Allah from all Satan, the poisonous Beast and the painful evil eye.
Hadith of Bukhari
In addition, it is recommended to always recite taawuz, surahs of protection, wirid, and some prayers taught by clerics. It is also recommended to always involve Allah SWT in every situation, such as with the words of MasyaAllah, SubhanAllah, and so on.
How to treat Evil Eye
If a person has already been affected by this disease, then he should be patient and believe that everything happens with the permission of Allah SWT.
“No calamity befalls any man except by the permission of Allah; and whosoever believe in God will surely instruct his heart. And Allah knows all things”.
QS. At Tagabun: 11
However, Muslims should also rely on Allah Almighty and believe that the only one who can heal is Allah Almighty. Efforts that can be done to cure this disease are as follows.
1. Ruqyah Syar‘iyyah
Hadith from Asma bint Umais (ra) says:
“O Messenger of Allah, Banu Ja’far is affected by the evil eye disease, may we ask them to be ruqyah? The Prophet replied: Yes, it is permissible. If anyone can precede fate, that is the evil eye”.
Hadith of Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, al-Albani in Saheeh Ibn Majah
The way to ruqyah people affected by the disease is to recite ruqyah prayers from autentic hadith and verses of the Qur’an.
2. Ablution (Wudu)
Another treatment taught by the Prophet SAW is ablution (Wudu). The trick is to ask the person who inflicted the evil eye to perform wudu, then the water is poured behind the body of the victim affected by the disease. As contained in the following hadith:
“In the past, the person who caused evil eye was ordered to perform wudu, then the person affected by evil eye bathed from the remaining wudu water”.
Hadith of Abu Daud
3. Bathing
If the person inflicting the disease is known and proven that his views are causing the victim pain, then a person who do ruqyah can ask that person to take a bath. Then, the water used for his bath was poured behind the victim’s body.
As the hadith of Ibn Abbas, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Evil eye is true. If there is a thing that can precede fate, then that is evil eye. So if you take a bath, use the bath water (to bathe the person affected by evil eye)”.
Hadith of Muslim
That is an explanation of this disease that can come from someone’s awe or spiteful look. May we be kept away from this disease by always spreading goodness for all humans.
