Difference between CPU Vs GPU – When looking at the list of specifications on a cellphone (HP), some of you may have encountered the terms CPU and GPU in the System on Chipset (SoC) chart. The SoC itself or often referred to as the chipset is a device that becomes a kind of HP “brain”
SoC plays an important role in operating the phone. All user commands are read and translated into specific actions on the HP thanks to the SoC. In carrying out this main function, the SoC is composed of several components, one of which is the CPU and GPU.
These two components have the same main function, namely as a tool to perform arithmetic operations or calculations, on a program that is run by user commands.
Despite their similarities, CPUs and GPUs have been counting functions in different program sectors. Then, what is the function of the CPU on a cell phone or what is a GPU on a cellphone?
Difference between CPU Vs GPU
CPU
Central Processing Unit or commonly abbreviated as CPU, is a component consisting of core blocks (core). This CPU can be considered as the brain of the machine and as the brain, the CPU has the ability to perform multiple tasks at once. The CPU is also responsible for the division of tasks for each of the components under it.
The CPUs on HP generally have a configuration of four to eight cores. With such a multi-core CPU design, it is possible for several applications on the cellphone to run simultaneously. Each of its cores will run at speeds that are generally between 2 to 3 Gigahertz (GHz).
The GHz unit itself refers to the frequency of 1 billion cycles per second. For example, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset with an Octa-core CPU with a speed of 2.4 Ghz.
Which means the configuration of the core block on the CPU in the chipset can generate 2.4 billion instructions per second. The higher the CPU speed, the more capable it is to run various applications simultaneously at one time.
The CPU also has a role to run data and temporary instructions or caches stored in RAM so that users will not have to wait long when they want to execute applications.
GPU
According to Android Authority, Graphic Processing Unit or commonly known by the abbreviation GPU, is a component that also functions to execute instructions on HP. While the CPU is designed to process multiple instructions, the GPU itself has its own specificity of instructions.
As the name suggests, the function of the GPU is to process instructions for displaying graphics on an HP screen. In simple terms, the GPU specifically has a role to play in drawing.
If your cellphone screen is likened to a blank canvas, the GPU will operate to draw the canvas so that a certain appearance or shape appears. In technical language, the GPU is responsible for processing graphics rendering instructions.
The process of executing instructions on the GPU is different from that of the CPU. GPUs are designed to process multiple data and similar instructions simultaneously in one line. While the CPU, the processing runs separately simultaneously in each core block.
Although it only has one specific function, in fact the GPU has a much more complex working system.
From the explanation above, CPU and GPU have different functions. The CPU processes general instructions, while the GPU is specialized for processing graphics. That’s the difference between CPU Vs GPU on Handphone, hopefully it’s useful.
