Situated at the intersection of media studies, technology studies, and US foreign relations, this study frames the ill-fated radio initiatives as symptomatic of an increasingly troubled US-East Asian relationship before the Pacific War.

Between 1919 and 1941, an array of American businessmen, diplomats, missionaries, and private citizens hoped to bring American radio to China. Initiatives included efforts to establish Sino-American radio-telegraphy links across the Pacific, start shortwave broadcasts of American programming to China, support America broadcasting in China itself, increase sales of American radio equipment, and carve out a niche on China’s airwaves for American missionary broadcasters. However, excessive faith in radio’s influential powers to promote the presumed benefits of American economic and cultural expansion blinded many Americans to the complexities they faced. American radio ultimately magnified rather than mitigated the tensions that pitched Americans against Chinese nationalists and Japanese imperialists in the years before the Pacific War. By drawing on scholarship in the history of technology, communications, media studies, and US foreign relations, the book’s exploration into the relationship between these fields enhances our understanding of today’s globalizing world.

Dozens of letters written to her family during WWII-from total strangers-to tell her great-grandmother that her son had been captured and was being held as a POW. How did they know this? Through short-wave radio, POWs were allowed to state their names and hometowns and sometimes relay a short message to their families. Scores of Americans, listening to the German propaganda from so far away, heard her grandfather’s information and took it upon themselves to write to her great-grandmother. All of these dear people wanted to give her great-grandmother a measure of comfort to know her son was alive. That was only the beginning of her journey. This book is a dedication to them-the radio heroes of WWII.

Les Thompson tells of his personal journey from the perspective of a working class child of once wealthy parents who lost everything in the Great Depression; a child with a strong determination to make his mark in mass media. The author chronicles the societal changes that he witnessed, as well as their effects on his own family, as he carved out a successful career in broadcasting and journalism. He also provides some handy how-to advice for young people entering broadcasting or journalism. This is a roller coaster ride through a ratings-driven industry; a career that can breed personal wealth, along with grave insecurity, satisfying accomplishments, and the inflated egos of performers and managers alike.

They promote cooperation between broadcasters and facilitate the exchange of audiovisual content. The EBU works to ensure that the crucial role of public service broadcasters is recognised and taken into consideration by decision-makers.
The EBU’s supreme governing body, the General Assembly, meets twice yearly.

Promoting public service values
Europe’s public service broadcasters are different from other market players; they are committed to public service values. The EBU represents its Members on European Union audiovisual policy matters, ensuring that these values are well understood and taken into account by decision-makers. They are consulted by the European Institutions on a regular basis on all issues of concern to the audiovisual sector. They also work closely with the UN, UNESCO and their colleagues in the World Broadcasting Unions (WBU) to ensure that their voice is heard in the global debate on media policy.

Working for the future
In 1950 Europe’s public service broadcasters embarked on an adventure. They decided to invest in the future, in a new technology – television. They used a fragile infrastructure to bring pictures to audiences all over Europe. Today, the EBU continues to play a leading role in bringing Europe into the future. They are at the forefront of research and development of new media, and they have worked to help develop many new radio and TV systems: radio data system (RDS), digital audio broadcasting (DAB), digital video broadcasting (DVB), high-definition TV (HDTV). They promote open technical standards and interoperability for the benefit of broadcasters and consumers, and explore the opportunities presented by new technologies. They study digital technology for production and transmission and advise members on appropriate solutions.

Bringing the event to your home
The Eurovision and Euroradio networks, operated by the EBU, carry daily exchanges of programmes, music, sports events and news between Members, and other media players. Much of the foreign news featured on national news bulletins has passed through the control centre in Geneva. Unparalleled know-how ensures reliable, on-air delivery of any event, from Skiing World Championships, to concerts such as the Proms, and the Eurosonic rock and pop festival. Special events teams ensure production and transmission facilities for news and current affairs events, wherever they happen.

Helping Members access valuable and diverse content
The EBU helps its members to access high quality programming for radio and television, and works with them to develop content for new platforms. Radio activities are wide-ranging, from news and sport, to drama and classical music. They have obtained the radio broadcast rights for the entire season of the New York Metropolitan Opera (20 operas to 20 countries). Their television co-productions include, animation: Tom, drama: Henry Dunant – Red on the Cross, documentary: Democracy and of course they also run the Eurovision Song Contest, and its website. The EBU acquires sports rights on behalf of its Members, including the Olympic Games, the Football World Cup and the World Championships in Athletics.

Dear friend of Deutsche Welle,

You have been listening to the DW-RADIO/English program for a long time and we hope that Deutsche Welle will remain a frequently used source of information for you also in future. Much to our regret we have to inform you that there will be no more shortwave broadcasts in English for your area as from October 30, 2011. The live stream will also be terminated. But DW-RADIO/English will still be available via the satellite AsiaSat 3S. And on our web site www.dw-world.de you will find a large attractive offer.

We would like to explain to you our reasons for deciding to largely discontinue shortwave transmissions of our radio broadcasts. The worldwide rise of the internet, mobile reception and media convergence have transformed methods and habits of communicating. DW and all other international broadcasters have to ride these changes. Shortwave is nowadays rarely used in most regions of the world, with the sole exception of Africa. As a result, the English shortwave broadcasts outside of Africa will be discontinued as from October 30, 2011.

However, DW will still be at your side to provide you with quality information. We are committed to strengthening our internet offer, TV programming and playout on mobile devices. We believe this is the best way for us to continue offering you strong, high-quality information.

We very much hope you will stay with us.

Yours sincerely,
DW Customer Service

And unlike the internet and satellite receivers, a shortwave radio is portable and easy to use. Take a portable radio onto the back deck, fire up a cigar and a good book and play the BBC or Radio Australia in the background without wireless routers or pointing a sat radio antenna to obtain a signal.

The WRTH is the only reference listing every shortwave station and most AM stations in the entire world. The demise of Larry Magne’s ‘Passport to World Band Radio” has left the WRTH alone in the field.

I am not sure how much longer shortwave radio will exist as a medium, but as long as it does, the WRTH is your ‘TV Guide’. They also produce quarterly updates to station schedules and frequency changes which can be downloaded from the internet. (World Radio TV Handbook 2011: The Directory of Global Broadcasting)

WRTH 2011 is the 65th edition of “WRT Handbook” and this great directory continues to offer the most comprehensive guide to broadcasting on the planet. Completely revised and updated, this new edition is the most accurate guide to national and international SW, MW, and FM broadcasting available. “The World Radio TV Handbook” is divided into a number of sections covering numerous topics, from National Radio, which looks at the world’s domestic radio services, listed by country and including contact details, to International Radio – featuring full facts about all broadcasters transmitting internationally; and from Television Broadcasts, which details the world’s main national broadcasters and large regional networks to frequency lists of all MW and international and domestic SW broadcasts. Also included in this revised edition is a reference section that contains listings of international and domestic transmitter sites, standard time and frequency transmissions, DX Club information, as well as other essential print and electronic resources.
